Bio - Gelston Dwight
Born and raised on Kauai, my teenage years were consumed with surfing. My path to becoming a photographer was lined with serendipitous opportunities and the influence of friends like Mario Perez, who first introduced me to photography. The day after I graduated from Kapaa High school (1989), I decided that I would be a photographer. I enrolled at Mesa Community College in San Diego and took one class, Intro Photography. After the semester I headed back to Kauai where I landed a job working for photographer Blaine Michioka who gave me my first shooting assignments. At the age of 19 I photographed the first wedding of my career. For the next three years I bounced from Kauai to Costa Mesa, back to Kauai, then to Santa Cruz. During this period, I mainly worked in photo labs learning film and print processing. I was planning to head back to Kauai when a friend proposed a three week road trip in Europe, I was in. While on our road trip, I was offered a job in a photo studio at a boutique ad house in Meinerzhagen, Germany (P.AD). I took the job and was introduced to industrial photography and large format cameras. While in Germany I was sent to Hamburg to assist photographer Simon Puschmann. Simon who was starting his photography career at the time had a passion for experimenting with photography techniques and processes, all of which I found inspiring. I bounced between Hawaii and Europe over a five year period assisting for Simon in Hamburg and assisting various NYC and LA photographers while on assignment in Hawaii. I was able to learn from all these photographers on jobs for clients like Harpers Bazaar, Playboy, YM, Nike, Nordstroms, Nieman Marcus and many, many more. Finally in 1998, I focused on developing my photography style and started my photography business. I been doing my thing ever since.
When I'm not photographing, retouching, or working on business related projects, I enjoy travelling, good food, dirt bike riding, hanging out with friends, and having fun with my family. My wife Iben (orginally from Denmark) is a wedding planner here on Kauai. We are proud parents of two kids, Malina (10 years old) and Makai (4 years old). Life on Kauai is good!
